PE

Rationale for PE at Pondhu Primary School

At Pondhu Primary School our curriculum aims to give children the knowledge, skills and understanding to achieve their full potential academically, socially and emotionally. We aim to give the children the necessary skills to prepare them for life in modern British society. Our curriculum reflects both the context of the school and the experiences of the children. This encourages the children to be aspirational, to fulfil their potential and reach the highest of expectations that we have of them.

Curriculum Intent:

The intent of Physical Education and school sport at Pondhu Primary School is to develop pupils who enjoy PE and who are physically confident, with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport. We believe that Physical Education and school sport experienced in a safe and supportive environment makes a vital and unique contribution to a pupil’s physical and emotional health, development and wellbeing. We believe that Physical Education paves the way for a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically, and strive to give children a wide range of experiences within their curriculum P.E and extra-curricular opportunities. We recognise the importance of competitive sport within a nurturing environment and ensure that children are given opportunities to compete regularly in sporting events. Furthermore, we intend for sport and PE at Pondhu to be another vehicle for developing and encouraging effort, determination and resilience in our pupils.

Curriculum Implementation:

Two PE sessions a week, and a variety of after school clubs provide all children with opportunities to enjoy school PE and sport and to develop their physical skills and abilities. Pondhu Primary School are members of the Poltair Sports Network and the St Austell and District Football and Netball leagues, and these provide regular competition for children of all abilities and all levels of experience. Our P.E. curriculum focuses on all main strands of physical education; dance, invasion games, gymnastics, striking and fielding games, athletics, outdoor adventurous activity and net and wall games. These are revisited year on year where pupils progressively build their skills and knowledge in each curriculum area.

Curriculum Impact:

PE and Sport at Pondhu Primary School aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values P.E promotes (including teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship). The impact of this curriculum will be clear, not just through the attainment of pupils against Age Related Expectations, but through the positive attitudes of our pupils towards physical activity and sport. We look for evidence through reviewing pupils’ knowledge and skill development. We also utilise lesson observations/learning walks and pupil voice surveys/interviews to inform our practice to provide the best possible experience. We will work to ensure our children develop skills, enjoy PE and sport and are actively engaged and motivated, not only in P.E lessons, but also in extra-curricular sporting opportunities both in and out of school.
