CORNWALL HEALTHY SCHOOLS UPDATE

September 11th 2015

Welcome to another healthy schools update, we hope you have had a great week and wish you an even better weekend!
We're going to keep it short and snappy this week so......here we go:

Cornwall Healthy Schools News:

  • A lovely welcome from Cape Cornwall School this week, where their ‘Healthy Schools’ certificate, and ‘Healthy schools Plus’ award were presented at assembly. Very well deserved for marvellous work in all areas of Health and Wellbeing.

  • We attended a training session on the Samaritans educational resource DEAL (Developing Emotional Awareness and Listening) for secondary schools and will be highlighting this fantastic resource during our work with schools.

Healthy Schools Training

Don’t forget to visit our website for details of our current training offer. We've recently added new dates for the following: Relationships & Sex Education training (Primary and Secondary); Drugs and Alcohol training (Primary and Secondary); and STOP Stigma training for secondary schools.

You can book your place directly on the website. And remember that some of our training can be delivered directly to your staff in school ask for more information if this interests you.

We now also have a training and events calendar on our website to enable you to find out easily what we have coming up! Check it out here!

Massage in Schools Programme Training Offer:
The reported benefits of peer massage include and an air of calm and co-operation in the classroom, an increased focus and a readiness to learn, improved confidence and self-esteem. We frequently receive enquires about courses for staff and we would really like to support schools by hosting a two-day MISP training course at Health Promotion in Pool. We love to offer our training free of charge to Cornish schools but, as this will be delivered by Touchline Training, there will be a charge per head for the two days but they will offer a substantial discount from their open training fee. If you would like further information, contact jilly.parkinson@cornwall.nhs.uk .

Hearty Lives News:

  • We have a very busy morning on Wednesday, showing British Heart Foundation officials around Pennoweth Primary School. We had a wonderful breakfast at their fab Breakfast Club and chatted with members of staff and the school council gave us a great guided tour of the school, their poly-tunnel and (our favourite bit…) the bamboo secret corner and quite garden space. Chompy made a new home in the kitchen and BHF were very pleased to see he had been embraced with such passion. A massive thank you to Janet, Rob and the rest of the school and to Little Kitchen Magicians for joining us.

  • We also had one of our best days ever at Pondhu Primary School this week. We worked with Key Stage 2 classes and investigated the sugar content of our lunchboxes and considered healthier alternatives. The children guessed and measured the amount of sugar in 3 different boxes and then made pledges to make a sugar swap in their own lunchbox. We then did 2 workshops in the afternoon with parents at the schools parent forum – nearly 90 adults in one afternoon is the best turn out we have ever seen so thank you Pondhu School for inviting us along. We look forward to coming back and working with your families around shopping on a budget and supermarket tricks.

Facebook Competition:
We are currently running a family active Facebook Competition. All parents have to do is visit the Hearty Lives Cornwall Facebook page, find the image of the prize and ‘Like and Comment’ – it’s that easy! The prize package contains pedometers, range of balls, table tennis set, light resistance band, water bottles and much, much more; full prize bundle details are on the website. Closing date is the last Friday of the month. Please add to your school newsletter and encourage families to enter!
